Did Your Zodiac Sign Change? Maybe. Here’s Why.

It’s time to check your horoscope because the signs are a-changin’—literally. Word of a 13th zodiac sign has been floating around the internet, so here’s a breakdown of what it means.

First, some background: Zodiac signs correlate to constellations of the same name. When the sun passes through the constellation, we enter the date of a new sign. Easy enough.

But once a year, a 2016 article by NASA gets rumors buzzing about a newly discovered zodiac sign. The article depicts a 13th constellation called Ophiuchus, lasting from Nov. 29-Dec. 17, placing it between Scorpio and Sagittarius on the zodiacal wheel. This affects every sign, meaning your birth date may fall under a new zodiac.

But don’t freak out just yet. Astrologer Jasmine Wolfe of Sacramento, CA, said the measure of zodiacs is based on culture. Eastern cultures practice Vedic astrology, which recognizes 13 signs, including Ophiuchus; while western cultures practice tropical astrology, which only recognizes 12.

Before choosing which one to follow, here are the traits associated with Ophiuchus. They’re curious, seekers of truth with a hot temper and high libido. They often have internal wounds, which draw them to health and healing.

Ultimately, the choice to recognize Ophiuchus—and maybe realign your sign—is optional.

“If anyone out there reads about Ophiuchus and it really resonates with them, go for it,” Wolfe said.
