As the end of 2019 nears, it’s rare to find someone who hasn’t heard of Lizzo. Her song, Truth Hurts, has sat at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks, even though the song was released in 2017. For many reasons besides this one, 2019 has truly been the year of Lizzo.
She is currently singing, rapping and dancing around the United States on her Cuz I Love You Too Tour, which stopped for two nights in Minneapolis. Both shows, held at The Armory which has an 8,400-person capacity, sold out within minutes.
Moments before she took the stage, a black curtain dropped to reveal a colorful backdrop of stained glass windows with hearts on them and the signature Lizzo DJ booth. As she rose up on to the DJ booth and began to rap the song, Heaven Help Me, the energy in the audience exploded.
This show was all ages, and the crowd consisted of a wide variety of people. There were college students, people in their 30’s and even some senior citizens. The diverse audience population is a testament to Lizzo’s message of acceptance and love for all people.
Throughout the 85-minute set, Lizzo sang most of her newest album, Cuz I Love You, and the audience sang along to virtually every song. There was a fair amount of pushing and shoving, which is generally expected at The Armory. When over 8,000 individuals are crammed into a general admission area, people are bound to want the best view.
Lizzo was personable and chatted with the audience between almost every song. She even revealed she was a little bit late to the show because she was eating mac and cheese backstage.
The highlights of the night were when Lizzo catered to her large Minnesota fan base. This included talking to the audience about how the people of the Twin Cities lifted her up when she was a much smaller artist. Another Minnesota moment occurred when she sang the lyric from Truth Hurts, “new man on the Minnesota Vikings,” while wearing the coordinating jersey.
The performance also included performing deep cuts from her newest album such as the song, Lingerie. Her extravagant and flowy pink pajamas connected her fashion to the lyrical content of the song.
When the concert ended, people left the venue with smiles on their faces. Lizzo’s message of positivity and self-loved appeared to resonate with the audience and if the bouncing floors of The Armory were any indication, people felt good as hell to be spending a night with Lizzo.
