Local Spots for Great Live Music

Get your local music fix at one of these great go-to spots

Ditch the headphones and get out of the apartment to take in some local tunes. Des Moines has a great line-up when it comes to local music venues. Here’s a list of my favorites. There’s no excuse not to go out and rock out—there’s something going on every night of the week.

The best place for local favorites, by far. Catch traveling acts playing alongside Des Moines acts four to seven nights a week. This venue houses all genres—from metal and hip-hop to indie and folk bands. Check out the calendar at vaudevillemews.com.

Wooly’s

A mid-sized venue more focused on national acts, Wooly’s features a huge space for jamming out right in front of the stage. Take in the open space and minimal décor. All the more room for heavy bass lines and screeching guitar riffs. The drinks are strong and the bands are loud—what more can a live music aficionado ask for?

Star Bar

This after-hours music venue is home to weekly local acts. Catch The Snacks or dance-worthy Latin bands when looking for some good food with a side of tunes. Don’t be afraid to dance—it’s encouraged. This venue is targeted toward an older group. Think jazz enthusiasts with a Latin-music-loving wild side.

House of Bricks

Heavy rock and metal enthusiasts rejoice—this venue’s the perfect spot. The grunge-style atmosphere and constant group of smokers outside this East Village haunt create a surprisingly welcoming ambiance. You can guarantee that there won’t usually be any national acts headlining this venue, but that’s the appeal. Stop in for a drink and make a friend or two. And enjoy the new rooftop bar during the warmer months.
