The disconnect at college
After being in college for almost three months, I’ve realized that I rarely watch TV anymore. I’ve become thoroughly unentertained by toddlers strutting across a stage in fake teeth and spray tans. It’s not just because TV has become exhaustingly boring and utterly terrorizing for me, it’s because I’ve forgotten about it.
Now and then, I’ll turn on an old episode of One Tree Hill to dull my mind after a rough day, but I can no longer just sit down and watch TV like I used to. I need a reason—like watching Beauty and the Beast on ABC Family on a Saturday night or keeping up on the overly dramatic lives of my favorite Degrassi characters. I’ll also occasionally tune in for an important KU basketball game. Otherwise, TV basically fails to keep my attention, especially since the Internet has become my main source of news.
I’ve found other ways to occupy my time while here at college:
- Napping
- Writing in the journal that my friend and I send back and forth to each other
- Having random life chats
- Going out
- “Working out”
- Prematurely listening to Christmas music
- YouTubing the theme songs of old childhood shows
- Skyping friends from home
- Even doing homework (gasp!)
I haven’t cut television out of my life by any means. I still like it, but I have seen how keeping it off has been beneficial. It gets me to get up and go out. Soon enough, people will realize how much of a bust TV has become with the dominance of reality shows, and that we must open our eyes to the reality of our own lives.
